Prospective Graduate Students:
**Deadline to be sponsored for Graduate School Applications in my lab: Late November, annually
I currently have funded opportunities for graduate students for Fall 2023
Please send all enquiries to: [email protected]
I am looking for graduate students who are highly motivated and have a keen interest in studying soil microbiomes and especially microbial species that interact with plants, which include mutualists that help plants grow, as well as pathogens that cause disease. Climate change will inevitably alter many aspects of our environments in the future, so it is important for us to understand what the impacts will be. For example, frequent drought spells could exacerbate plant diseases from soil pathogens, or could reduce the efficiency of beneficial functions, such as symbiotic fixing-nitrogen, which many plants need to grow.
In my lab, we use a combination of field and laboratory experiments to determine how soil microbes evolutionarily respond to environmental change, especially in habitats at risk of exposure to high levels of salinity, drought and warming. As a student in my lab, you will gain experience designing and conducting your own experiments, and working with genomic data derived from multiple sequencing technology platforms. When combined with advanced statistical and bioinformatic analysis techniques, we can together uncover the genetic basis of microbial responses to soil environments.
Please email me ([email protected]) a cover letter, stating why you are interested in my lab, graduate school, and describe any relevant experience. Please attach a CV that also lists 3 individuals that can provide you with a letter of reference on request. Depending on your interests and the candidate pool, we can discuss further what research projects would be the most suitable.
To be considered for graduate school in my lab at Florida International University, I will need to agree to sponsor your application, and you will need to submit an application to the admission office in early January for the following August intake. Instructions are found here and here(GRE has been waived in the Biology Program).
All Postdoctoral Student enquiries are welcome!
If you are considering writing your own scholarship to study or work in my lab (graduate student, or postdoc, I can assist with scholarship applications!)
